Merely a week after the actual day, leading artists of Hungarian classical music will celebrate the 80th birthday of Steve Reich, who is probably the most important living representative of musical minimalism. The American composer is a veritable icon of contemporary classical music, whose repetitive music has had an immense influence on modern musical aesthetics, and whose oeuvre is an outstanding achievement in modern music.

This will be the first time the Hungarian public will have heard a live performance of City Life, a unique experiment in many regards, which integrates the atmosphere of New York in the score, including the honking of cabs, the noise of jackhammers, foghorns and the sound of closing subway doors.

Another new composition to be presented will be Radio Rewrite, Reich’s first piece to be inspired by two songs of Radiohead. The 2013 London premiere of the five-movement composition occasioned enthusiastic reviews.

An event jointly organized with Liszt Academy.
